About me

Michael Kimmerlein

A little about my professional experience…

I’m in the early stages of my career and have experience in the non-profit sector and legal field.

Most recently, I held a number of different roles at Chisholm Chisholm and Kilpatrick LTD, a law firm in Providence, Rhode Island specializing in representing American veterans as they seek disability benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

In my time there, I had an opportunity to work in a variety of environments. As a document reviewer I created comprehensive outlines of clients’ files, paying close attention to detail to give the legal team the full scope of the individual case. I then worked in a more client-facing role where I was responsible for managing relationships with upwards of 250 clients and overseeing the day-to-day work on their appeals. I drafted well-researched and persuasive legal arguments which were instrumental in winning increased benefits for the clients in my portfolio. I also conducted thorough interviews with clients to draft affidavits that provided impactful insight that clients’ official records might not have effectively communicated. Finally, as a team lead I supervised a small team responsible for overseeing the payment of fees for the firm’s work from both clients and the VA. As the team lead, one of my first projects was doing a complete overhaul of the team’s manual. Using some insights from information design, I created a working digital document that improved the training experience for new hires and was consistent with the firm’s standards for internal documents. I was proud to lead the team I worked with and always put an emphasis on maintaining a supportive and productive environment.

Prior to my work at Chisholm Chisholm and Kilpatrick, I had an opportunity to work for a non-profit organization that I hold dear to my heart. Mustard Seed Communities cares for disabled and orphaned children in Central America and the Caribbean. In my time there, I worked on writing copy for the organization’s volunteer outreach email campaigns, using well-tested methods which resulted in a 25% increase in open rates. Working for Mustard Seed was an excellent opportunity to give back to an organization that I had volunteered with when I was in college.

Throughout all of my professional experience and even back into my time in college, I held a number of freelance writing positions for a variety of publications. While in college, I interned at The Independent, a southern Rhode Island newspaper, where I worked on a series on local libraries as well as writing a profile on World War II veterans who had recently visited their respective memorials in Washington, DC. I also did work for my university’s nationally-distributed research magazine where I did the research and writing for profiles of economics and political science professors and the research they were conducting at the time. On top of that, I did the majority of the writing for a free tourism magazine where I took copy from the sponsoring companies and converted it into engaging content for folks visiting the East Bay region of Rhode Island. And of course, I wrote for my college newspaper, doing assignments both serious and let’s say…creative.

Speaking of my education…

I attended the University of Rhode Island, a mere 10 minutes from my childhood home. I earned my bachelors degree in journalism with a minor in political science.

I’ve got some hobbies, too…

I do some amateur photography and love cooking new and exciting dishes. You can find me most weekends either out on a disc golf course or going on some sort of adventure with my wife and newborn son and our crazy dog, Maisy.
